Balance
What it is
Every object in your frame has "visual weight" — how much attention it demands. Balance is the arrangement of these elements so that one side of the image doesn’t feel significantly heavier or emptier than the other.
Why it matters
A balanced image feels harmonious and restful; an unbalanced one can feel chaotic or unintentionally stressful.
A common pitfall
Filling one side of the frame with a strong subject while leaving the other side completely empty creates a lopsided, unfinished composition.

What to look for when you’re shooting
- If you have a large, dominant subject on one side, try placing a smaller, visually interesting object on the other side to counterweight it.
- Notice how bright colours or high-contrast areas draw more attention and carry more visual weight than dark, muted areas.
- Squint at the scene; if one side looks darker or busier than the other, adjust your position.
